Breaking: Justice Surya Kant Sworn In as India’s 53rd Chief Justice, To Serve Till Feb 2027

Justice Surya Kant has officially taken oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Administered by the President, the oath affirmed his commitment to uphold the Constitution of India with full faith, devotion, and integrity. As he recited the constitutional pledge, Justice Surya Kant vowed to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the nation and to discharge his duties with complete knowledge, ability, and wisdom. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, former President Ram Nath Kovind, and former Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. Justice Gavai, who was appointed to the Supreme Court on the same day as Justice Surya Kant, greeted him warmly, reflecting their long-standing camaraderie. Born in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant has had an extensive judicial career. He previously served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. Over the last six years, he has been part of several major constitutional benches, including those dealing with Article 370 and various significant SLPs. Known for his humane approach, clarity, and thorough preparation, Justice Surya Kant is expected to bring balanced and people-centric leadership to the Supreme Court during his 15-month tenure, which will continue until 9 February 2027.
