Breaking: Ghazipur Killing Puts Police Under Lens as Family Alleges Gang Extortion and Deadly Neglect

The murder of Vineet Rai, son of a hotel businessman in Ghazipur, has sparked serious concerns over criminal activity and the effectiveness of local policing. Rai was shot dead on May 29 when motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly opened fire in a public area, carrying out a brazen attack that has left the community shaken. According to the victim’s family, the killing was the culmination of a prolonged campaign of threats and extortion. Rai’s father has accused the alleged Katra Gang of being behind the murder and claims that repeated demands for ₹20 lakh were made in connection with the family’s hotel business. The family alleges that refusal to meet those demands led to continuous intimidation and harassment. The case has become more controversial due to allegations that local police failed to act despite prior warnings. Relatives claim that threats had been reported earlier and question whether stronger intervention could have prevented the tragedy. They have also alleged a nexus between the gang and certain police personnel, though authorities have not publicly confirmed any such connection. The absence of swift arrests has intensified public scrutiny, with the family demanding immediate action against those responsible. Critics argue that the incident raises broader concerns about extortion networks, organized crime, and law-enforcement responsiveness in the region. Police continue to investigate the murder, the alleged gang links, and the claims made by the victim’s family. As the search for the attackers progresses, the case remains under close watch, with growing demands for justice, transparency, and accountability from authorities.
