Bhiwandi: 4-Storey Apartment Crashes During Repairs, Several Feared Trapped

A major accident occurred late at night in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi when a four-storey residential building, Kohinoor Apartments, collapsed during repair work. The building, constructed in 2012, had already been declared dangerous by the municipal corporation due to visible structural cracks. Residents said the evacuation process was underway when the building suddenly gave way. Authorities fear that five to six people may still be trapped under the debris, while rescue and relief operations are continuing at the site. According to local officials, the collapse took place around 11 p.m., after signs of structural failure were noticed earlier in the evening. Initial reports suggest that the contractor carrying out repair work allegedly demolished all three main support pillars simultaneously without providing temporary structural support, which may have triggered the collapse. The municipal corporation had previously issued notices declaring the building unsafe and had permitted repair work. Officials are investigating whether negligence during the repairs caused the tragedy. Emergency teams remain engaged in clearing the rubble and searching for survivors as efforts continue to rescue anyone trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
