Assam Flood Crisis: Sivasagar and Nagaon Reeling Under Severe Floods

Assam continues to face one of the worst flood situations in the country, with Sivasagar and Nagaon among the hardest-hit districts. Days of heavy rainfall have left lakhs of people affected, while thousands have been displaced from their homes. In Sivasagar’s Betbari area, floodwaters submerged houses, washed away roads, and left residents with little time to escape. Many families lost all their belongings, including essential documents, school materials, and household items. Agricultural fields remain underwater, crops have been destroyed, and livestock losses have further deepened the crisis. In Nagaon, continuous rain caused water from the Karbi Hills to flow through the Diju River, inundating low-lying areas such as Kalapani and Diju Basti. Flooded roads and neighbourhoods have severely disrupted daily life. Relief camps are sheltering large numbers of displaced residents, many of whom are uncertain about rebuilding their lives. Meanwhile, the Centre and the Assam government have assured all possible assistance. Union Health Minister JP Nadda, accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited flood-affected areas and relief camps to review the situation and reassure victims of continued support.
