Zohran Mamdani is moving to Gracie Mansion: All you need to know about the 11,000-square-foot historic residence

When New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion in January, he will be stepping into one of the most storied homes in American politics. The move marks a dramatic shift from his modest, rent-stabilised apartment in Astoria, Queens, where he built much of his housing-justice platform and shaped his identity as a tenants’ rights advocate. For a democratic socialist whose campaign centred on freezing rents, expanding affordable housing and protecting vulnerable residents, the relocation to a mansion estimated by some reports to be worth around 100 million dollars has already sparked conversation. Mamdani has said the decision is based on family safety and the practical demands of governing, adding that the home should be used for the purpose it was intended, helping the mayor carry out official duties effectively.

What is Gracie Mansion?

Gracie Mansion has been the official residence of the New York City mayor since 1942. Built in 1799 and painted its recognisable pale yellow, the Federal-style wooden house stands inside Carl Schurz Park on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, overlooking the East River. It was originally designed as a two-storey country villa for its first owner, Scottish-American shipping merchant Archibald Gracie, who intended it as a peaceful estate far from the bustle of the city. Although Gracie later lost the property due to financial difficulties, the name endured. New York City acquired the estate in 1896, incorporated the surrounding land into Carl Schurz Park and repurposed the house for various civic uses before it officially became the mayoral residence during the Second World War.

How large is the residence?

Today, Gracie Mansion spans roughly 11,000 to 13,000 square feet, depending on which interior spaces are counted. It contains formal sitting rooms, high-ceilinged parlours, a dining room, period fireplaces and the private living quarters used by the mayor’s family. The most significant expansion took place in 1966, when the Susan E Wagner Wing was added to host large meetings, receptions and public events. This addition helped transform the house into a functional venue for diplomacy, civic ceremonies and cultural programming, while preserving the historical character of the original structure.

Why is Mamdani moving in?

Mamdani, 34, has said the decision is rooted in safety considerations for his family as well as the need to focus fully on implementing his affordability agenda once he takes office. He and his wife, illustrator Rama Duwaji, will relocate from the Queens apartment he has called home since 2018. The couple do not have children. In his statement, Mamdani suggested that using the mansion as intended helps the mayor perform the role more effectively. He emphasised that while he may no longer live in Astoria, the community that shaped him will continue to influence his work.

Do all mayors live at Gracie Mansion?

Although the residence has been available to every mayor since 1942, not all have chosen to live there. Most, however, have called it home at some point, including Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams. The most notable exception was Michael Bloomberg, who opted to remain in his private Upper East Side townhouse throughout his twelve years in office. He used Gracie Mansion solely for official functions and public events. Some other mayors split their time between the mansion and private homes.

A home at the heart of New York’s political struggles

Gracie Mansion has frequently been the site of protests, particularly around housing and migrant-rights issues. In 2023, an anti-immigration rally faced counter-protesters on its doorstep, while a year later,a dozens of activists held a sleep-in outside the gates in opposition to changes proposed to the city’s right-to-shelter law. This history matters because Mamdani’s campaign revolved around the very issues that often bring demonstrators to the mansion’s front lawn. For many New Yorkers, the home symbolises much more than a mayoral residence. It is a stage for civic tension, protest and the fight for dignity in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

A symbolic move in a symbolic home

As Mamdani prepares to take office, his move to Gracie Mansion is more than a change of address. It places him at the centre of a residence that has long mirrored New York’s political, cultural and social tensions. For supporters, it is a practical step that enables him to govern effectively. For critics, it presents a symbolic contrast between a socialist politician and a grand historic home.Either way, the mansion’s next chapter will unfold under Mamdani’s watch, as he begins the work of addressing the very housing crisis that has shaped so much of the city’s recent history.
