‘You can call me Raja, we can just…’: Indian-origin Congressman shuts down ‘racist’ Florida leader

'You can call me Raja, we can just...': Indian-origin Congressman shuts down 'racist' Florida leader

Indian-origin Democrat leader makes it easy for US leader who complains that his name is unpronounceable.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi decimated Florida politician Chandler Langevin after Langevin specifically targeted him, mocked him and joked that Raja Krishnamoorthi’s name was unpronounceable. Raja Krishnamoorthi took the mocking in his stride and said he can be called by his first name Raja if ‘Krishnamoorthi’ is the harder part, but Chandler Langevin can only be called a ‘racist’ for his unrelenting hatred towards Indians. Chandler Langevin is a member of the Palm Bay City Council who made headlines because of his hateful statements against Indians. He said Indians in America only care for benefiting their countries and hence they should be ousted. This led to a massive controversy and the city council voted for the elimination of Langevin from the council. But Langevin said he wanted to start a bigger debate and did not mean to attack the Indian-American community who are contributing to the community, but his target was migrants, illegal aliens. But he attacked Indian-American Democrat leader Raja Krishnamoorthi after Krishnamoorthi issued a statement condemning Langevin’s attack. “When hate speech is normalized and communities are scapegoated, our democracy is weakened,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Name: Unpronounceable

Langevin did not take Krishnamoorthi’s statement as constructive criticism and reported Krishnamoorthi to the DHS as a foreign occupier. He mocked Krishnamoorthi and said his name is unpronounceable and his country of origin is Tatooine. Tatooine is a hot desert planet in Star Wars. Krishnamoorthi made it easy for Langevin and told him: “You can just call me Raja. I guess we can just call you… racist”Langevin went a step ahead and referred to Krishnamoorthi as ‘Rajesh Koothrapalli’, a fictional character of The Big Bang Theory.

Florida Republicans condemn Langevin

While Langevin defended, saying he is not the first Republican to have put out nasty posts, Florida Republicans have distanced themselves from his racist comments. Florida Republicans, such as Representative Mike Haridopolos and Senator Rick Scott, as well as several Democratic politicians, have also spoken out against Langevin’s comments.“The Brevard Republican Party does not condone or share Mr Chandler Langevin’s position with regard to the Indian community and culture here in our County,” Brevard county’s Republican party chair, Rick Lacey, said in a statement. “Even though Mr Langevin is a registered Republican, his views are his, and his alone.”
