Today, the programme is recognised internationally as one of the most successful examples of area-wide integrated pest management, demonstrating how long-term scientific planning, rigorous monitoring and cross-border cooperation can permanently eliminate even one of agriculture’s most persistent pests.

Why scientists say the fight against the pink bollworm is not completely over

Although the pink bollworm has disappeared from commercial cotton fields in the United States and Mexico, researchers caution that the story is not yet over. Populations of the insect remain established in several parts of Asia, Africa, Australia and South America, creating an ongoing risk that the pest could be accidentally reintroduced through international trade or the movement of infested plant material.The authors of the PNAS study emphasise that maintaining eradication will require continued surveillance, strict biosecurity measures and international cooperation.
