‘Whether Starmer stays or goes...’: Larry the Cat’s viral post steals spotlight amid UK political drama

Larry the Cat

As new political chaos hit UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid growing discussion around his leadership, many social media users appeared to rally behind one familiar Downing Street figure who has outlasted governments, cabinet reshuffles and political turmoil for years, Larry the Cat.The long-serving Downing Street mouser’s X post soon went viral online. The post read: “Whether Starmer stays or goes we can all agree that me being fed is the most important thing.” Larry, the grey-and-white tabby who serves as Chief Mouser at 10 Downing Street, has become one of Britain’s most recognisable political mascots over the years.Originally rescued from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Larry moved into Downing Street in 2011 and has since served under six British prime ministers. Now regarded as something of a permanent resident of British politics, the cat frequently appears in photographs with world leaders, journalists and government officials outside the prime minister’s residence. The viral post quickly drew thousands of reactions online, with many users joking that Larry had become the only stable figure left in Westminster politics.“prime minsters come and go but larry is for ever,” one user wrote. Another commented: “Can you just take over and have done with it please. Larry for PM.”Others reflected on the number of political leaders Larry has seen during his years at Downing Street.“I can’t believe how many top level servants you have got through. I bet you were rehomed hoping for some stability in your life. Hope there is a requirements list when there are changeovers eg minimum amount of Dreamies per day,” another person posted.Having completed 15 years at Downing Street earlier this year, Larry remains a familiar presence outside Number 10 and continues to occupy a unique place in British political culture.
