Watch: Massachusetts teen reverses pickup and plunges off pier

A teenager in Massachusetts had a near-fatal escape after his pickup truck rolled backwards off a pier and plunged into the water, narrowly avoiding his father’s boat. The incident happened on Sunday morning at the Green Harbor Town Pier in Marshfield, around 25 miles south of Boston. Police said the teen, who was dropping off bait, lost control of the vehicle as it reversed. Surveillance footage showed the white Ford pickup smashing through a wooden barrier before toppling 15 feet into the harbour, reported the Herald Sun. The truck narrowly missed landing on his father’s boat, which was tied up below. “Luckily the father wasn’t where the truck landed, so neither of them got hurt too badly,” one witness was quoted as saying by local station WHDH.The teenager managed to escape through the rear window of the vehicle and swam to safety. Fishermen nearby pulled him onto the dock before he was taken to hospital for precautionary checks. Police confirmed he did not suffer serious injuries.Witnesses said the vehicle sank so quickly that it disappeared from sight. “I was just, like, so surprised,” one young onlooker was quoted as saying by WHDH. “I didn’t know that it was going to be crashed in and the roof was going to be caved in. I thought it was just going to be cracked and all, like, broken.”When the pickup was finally pulled from the water by a recovery team, its roof appeared badly damaged, leaving onlookers stunned. Photos and video later showed crowds gathered at the pier as the wreck was hauled back to shore, according to the Daily Mail.Police in Marshfield confirmed the crash was an accident, though the exact cause of the loss of control remains unclear. “It was a pretty significant incident, right, but I’m very happy with the outcome,” one officer said, as cited by WHDH.The Green Harbor Town Pier, also known as the Marshfield Town Pier, is home to much of the town’s commercial fishing fleet, including lobster boats, according to the North and South Rivers Watershed Association.
