Three Culpeper teenagers are being hailed as heroes after they rushed into Lake Culpeper and rescued a family whose kayaks overturned on Monday afternoon. The teens were attending golf team tryouts when they spotted the family in distress and acted immediately.According to police, Andrew Tuggle, 15, Jackson Castro, 17, and Gavin Cain, 17, all students at Eastern View High School, saw the overturned kayaks near the Lake Culpeper Dam water intake area and did not waste a second. They called 911, alerted their coaches and then jumped into the water to help.

A fast rescue in rough conditions

The rescue happened around 3:30 p.m. on July 27 between December Court and the intake area of the Lake Culpeper Dam. Police said the shoreline made the situation even more difficult, with a steep, overgrown hillside and a boulder-covered edge that made access to the water challenging.Even so, the three teens ran through thorny brush, swam out to the family and helped bring two adults and a 3-year-old boy safely back to shore. They then returned to retrieve the kayaks. All three family members were wearing life jackets and were not injured.

“We heard a big splash”

The teens later described the moment they realized something was wrong. Castro said they heard a loud splash, and then a child screaming. Cain recalled hearing the little boy calling out for help, while Castro said the adult holding the child was struggling and the family began shouting for help in Spanish. The scene was intense, but the teens say they reacted on instinct rather than thinking through the danger. They were shirtless and shoeless as they ran down to the lake, which made the rescue even more physically difficult.

Police and school officials praise their actions

Culpeper Police Chief Christopher Settle said the teens acted without hesitation and at real personal risk to themselves. He said their quick thinking and courage saved three lives that day.The boys’ golf coach, Patrick Thornhill, was among the first to connect the rescue to his players. He praised them as the kind of students high school sports is meant to help shape: strong, character-driven and willing to step up when it matters.Thornhill said he hopes the boys understand that they are capable of being strong community members, and he described himself as extremely proud of them. The Culpeper Police Department and Culpeper County Public Schools also formally commended the teens for preventing what could have become a tragedy, as per reports.

The teens stay humble

Despite the praise, the three students have stayed modest about what they did. Castro said he felt he was simply in the right place at the right time, while Cain said he did not really think before acting. That humility has only added to the admiration from their town. Chief Settle, who has known the boys since they were young, said they are heroes and added that the outcome could have been very different if they had not jumped in.

Why their actions matter

The rescue stands out not just because it was dramatic, but because it shows how quickly an emergency can unfold on the water. A capsized kayak can become life-threatening fast, especially when a child is involved or when the shoreline is hard to reach. In this case, the family’s life jackets likely played a major role in keeping everyone safe until help arrived. It also highlights the value of people who are willing to act before official responders arrive. The teens did not wait for a perfect plan; they saw danger and responded immediately. That split-second decision likely made all the difference.

A community moment to remember

For Culpeper, this was one of those stories that quickly became bigger than a single afternoon on the lake. It became a reminder of how ordinary people, especially young ones, can make an extraordinary difference when it matters most. The three teens were at golf tryouts, not looking for a rescue mission. But when they spotted trouble, they ran toward it instead of away from it, and that choice saved lives. Go to Source
