US bar mass shooting: At least 4 dead and 20 injured in South Carolina; suspect at large

At least four people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a mass shooting early Sunday at a crowded bar on St Helena Island in South Carolina, according to authorities.The shooting took place shortly before 1am at Willie’s Bar and Grill, a popular gathering spot on the island, the Beaufort County sheriff’s office said. Deputies arrived to find multiple victims with gunshot wounds as people fled the scene seeking shelter in nearby businesses and homes.“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement on X, adding, “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.” Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, while at least 20 others sustained injuries. Officials said four of the injured are in critical condition at nearby hospitals. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.Authorities said they were investigating “persons of interest,” but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. US representative Nancy Mace, whose district includes St Helena, expressed grief over the tragedy. “COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County,” she posted on X. “Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.” The incident has shaken the quiet coastal community known for its scenic views and small-town character.(With inputs from AP and The New York Times)
