Thousands crossed border into Spain
Spain has announced the deployment of its military to Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the North African enclave from Morocco, triggering, what the authorities and people are describing as one of the territory’s worst border crises in years. Morocco’s embassy in Madrid blamed criminal networks involved in migrant smuggling and human trafficking for the mass crossings, saying Moroccan authorities did not support or encourage the movements.The reason behind the sudden influx remains unclear. Some local authorities suggested a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling, which bars the immediate return of migrants arriving by sea without due process, may have encouraged more people to attempt the crossing.
