For decades, the rise in Earth’s average temperature has appeared to follow a fairly consistent upward path. Individual years have stood out because of events such as strong El Niño episodes or volcanic eruptions, but the broader trend seemed relatively stable. That picture is beginning to change.According to the study published in Geophysical Research Letters, titled “Global Warming Has Accelerated Significantly”, the pace of global warming itself has increased, with the past decade warming faster than any comparable period in modern records. Rather than relying on unusually hot individual years, the researchers removed the influence of short-term natural climate fluctuations before examining long-term temperature data. Their analysis points to a statistically significant acceleration that appears to have emerged around the middle of the last decade, raising fresh questions about how quickly the world is approaching key climate thresholds.

How scientists confirmed global warming is accelerating

According to the authors, previous attempts to determine whether warming had accelerated were often obscured by natural climate variability, making it difficult to separate long-term trends from short-term fluctuations. To address that problem, the researchers adjusted five major global temperature datasets by removing the estimated effects of three natural influences: El Niño, volcanic eruptions and changes in solar activity. Once those temporary factors were filtered out, the underlying warming trend became clearer.As per the study, the adjusted temperature records indicate that global warming has accelerated with more than 98% statistical confidence. The researchers also found that the rate of warming over the past ten years exceeds that of any previous decade in the observational record.

Five global temperature datasets confirm accelerating global warming

Rather than relying on a single dataset, the analysis examined five widely used global temperature records compiled by NASA, NOAA, HadCRU, Berkeley Earth and the ERA5 reanalysis.Two separate statistical approaches reached broadly similar conclusions once the short-term sources of variability were removed. One method identified a significant change in the warming trend around 2013 or 2014 across all five datasets, while another also detected acceleration with a confidence level exceeding 98%.The researchers stress that recent record-breaking years alone are not responsible for the result. Their adjustments actually reduce part of the exceptional warmth associated with recent El Niño conditions, suggesting the underlying warming trend remains stronger even after those temporary effects are accounted for.

Why scientists believe global warming is speeding up

The study itself does not try to pin down the exact cause of the apparent acceleration. Instead, it focuses on establishing whether the temperature records show a statistically meaningful change in the rate of warming.Climate models have long indicated that some acceleration would be expected under continued greenhouse gas emissions. They also point to existing research suggesting that declining atmospheric aerosol pollution may have reduced part of the cooling effect that previously offset greenhouse warming, although they emphasise that uncertainty remains over the size of that contribution. What the analysis does indicate is that the observed increase cannot simply be dismissed as the result of unusually warm years or random climate variability.

Global warming could cross the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C limit before 2030

One implication of the findings is the shrinking window before the world consistently exceeds the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C warming benchmark. A single year above 1.5°C does not constitute a formal breach of the Paris target, which is defined over a much longer average. Even so, if the current pace of warming continues, the researchers estimate that the long-term trend could cross that threshold before the end of this decade.The statistical evidence now suggests that global temperatures have shifted away from the trajectory seen during previous decades, with the departure becoming apparent from around 2015 onwards. The authors conclude that continued warming will largely depend on future greenhouse gas emissions, noting that while warming can be halted by reaching net-zero carbon dioxide emissions, reversing it is considerably more difficult.
