Saudi Arabia is building more than just tracks; it’s building a future that moves at high speed. The Kingdom is developing a massive $7 billion high-speed rail project, affectionately called the “Land Bridge,” that will completely redefine travel and commerce across the Arabian Peninsula. This project is a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030, serving as a “desert miracle” designed to connect major population centers and turn the country into a global transport powerhouse.

Saudi Arabia’s $7 billion Land Bridge project

This ambitious rail line is designed to create a direct link between the two vital bodies of water flanking the Kingdom: the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The Land Bridge will span nearly 1,500 kilometres of rail, directly connecting Jeddah on the Red Sea to Dammam on the Gulf, with the capital city of Riyadh serving as the central hub. The most impactful change will be felt by commuters and travelers on the Riyadh-Jeddah corridor. Currently, that journey takes around 12 hours by car, but once the new high-speed trains are operational, that travel time will be slashed to under four hours. This massive shift in logistics and personal travel convenience will dramatically shrink the physical size of the Kingdom in terms of travel time.

Vision 2030: A strategic infrastructure leap

The new Land Bridge is key to the Saudi Railway Company’s (SAR) modernization drive, which is focused on scaling up the national network. The Kingdom plans to expand its total railway network from its current 5,300 kilometres to over 8,000 kilometres, firmly positioning the country as a critical logistics and transport hub for the entire Gulf and wider Arab regions. To achieve this, SAR has already ordered 15 new trains capable of reaching top speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour. Beyond passenger travel, the expansion includes building new freight and passenger stations to link key ports like King Abdullah Port directly with major industrial cities such as Yanbu. This ensures that the high-speed tracks serve both people and critical national industry.

Key features of the Land Bridge project

  • High-Speed Rail Connectivity: The project will establish a high-speed rail corridor connecting Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam, facilitating efficient passenger and freight movement across the Kingdom.
  • Economic and Strategic Significance: By linking major industrial cities and ports, the rail line aims to enhance trade and logistics efficiency, contributing to the Kingdom’s economic diversification goals.
  • Technological Advancements: The introduction of modern rail technologies, including hydrogen-powered trains, underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.

When will the Rail Start and how much will it cost?

The Saudi Landbridge project is slated for completion by December 2030, with construction currently underway. While exact fares for the Landbridge route are yet to be announced, existing train services in Saudi Arabia offer competitive pricing. For example, economy class tickets on the Haramain High-Speed line range from SAR 40 ($11) for short distances to SAR 150 ($40) for longer journeys. Business class fares can go up to SAR 315 ($84). Tickets can be conveniently purchased online through the official Saudi Railway Company (SAR) website or mobile app. These platforms allow passengers to select trains, seats, and fares, and issue e-tickets with QR codes for easy boarding. As Saudi Arabia advances toward a future of integrated land, air, and sea transport, the Land Bridge project stands as a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to modernization and sustainable development. With over 2.6 million passengers already utilizing Saudi trains in the second quarter of 2025 alone, the enthusiasm for rail travel is evident. Go to Source
