Saudi Arabia launches nationwide awareness drive for World Sight Day and White Cane safety day

A healthcare professional warmly engages a visitor at a modern exhibition booth, highlighting eye health resources.

Throughout October, Saudi Arabia is spotlighting eye health and the rights of people with visual impairments by marking World Sight Day and White Cane Safety Day. These global observances serve as a platform to raise public awareness about the causes of blindness, promote preventive care, and encourage early detection through regular eye check-ups — especially as individuals grow older. As part of these awareness efforts, the Ebsar Foundation — a Saudi-based organization dedicated to supporting individuals with visual impairments — is rolling out a series of educational and community-focused initiatives across the country. According to Amal Al-Hunaiti, CEO of the foundation, the month-long campaign aims to deepen public understanding of vision health and foster more inclusive social practices.Among the foundation’s key initiatives is a specially designed program for mothers of children with visual impairments. The program highlights the central role mothers play in their children’s development and empowers them with knowledge and strategies to offer better support at home and in broader society. To further encourage social inclusion, the foundation has organized recreational outings for visually impaired youth. These events are intended not only to provide enjoyment but also to educate the broader public on how to interact appropriately and empathetically with blind individuals, especially children.Later in the month, Ebsar will also be participating in the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh, one of the region’s major healthcare forums. Through this engagement, the foundation plans to reaffirm its advocacy for better vision care policies and continue spreading awareness about the importance of accessible and preventive eye health services. This nationwide initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to promoting vision health, supporting individuals with visual impairments, and building a more informed and inclusive society.
