Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal and other Indian American leaders call for gun safety after Brown University shooting

Indian American political leaders have called for stronger gun safety measures following a deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, that left two people dead and eight others injured. The attack took place on 14 December and prompted widespread condemnation and renewed debate over gun violence in the US.California Representative Ro Khanna described the incident as a “horrific mass shooting” and said repeated failures to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation continue to have deadly consequences. He added that Congress has debated gun reform for years without decisive action, despite broad public concern over mass shootings. Khanna said the Brown University attack once again shows the urgency of addressing gun violence at the federal level. Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal echoed those concerns, saying the frequency of mass shootings across the country should compel lawmakers to move beyond statements and towards concrete reforms. She said the US has seen too many such attacks in schools and public spaces, underscoring the scale of the problem. Jayapal added that legislative action is essential to reduce the risk of future violence and protect communities. Illinois Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi also expressed solidarity with the Brown University community, offering condolences to the victims and their families while urging Congress to take action to address gun violence. He said incidents like the Brown University shooting highlight the need for bipartisan efforts to reduce gun-related deaths and injuries. Krishnamoorthi added that protecting students and public spaces should remain a priority for lawmakers. The shooting occurred on the eve of the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack, adding to the significance of the moment for advocates of gun reform. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, while national leaders and community members mourn the victims and call for steps to prevent future violence.
