Unrest continues in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as a crackdown by Pakistani authorities has triggered growing anger among residents. On Wednesday, members of the British Kashmiri diaspora held a protest in UK’s Bradford, expressing solidarity with the people of PoJK and backing the demands of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).The protest came as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is in the middle of its so-called assembly elections, while Islamabad has intensified security operations in the region.Protesters gathered in Bradford city centre carrying banners and placards, demanding the protection of fundamental rights, civil liberties and human dignity. Organisers said the rally aimed to draw international attention as the worsening human rights situation in PoJK.Speakers at the protest claimed that security operations over the past two months had led to civilian deaths, created fear among residents and disrupted daily life. They also alleged that women, children and elderly people were among those affected. The protesters called for transparent and impartial investigations into allegations of excessive use of force, house raids and other reported human rights violations. They urged the authorities to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law. They also appealed to the international community, human rights organisations and the British government to closely monitor the situation in PoJK and support efforts to protect fundamental freedoms and promote a peaceful resolution to the issues raised by local communities.According to the organisers, residents of PoJK have continued to face action by Pakistani security forces, with several people reportedly killed or injured during firing on protesters in recent months. They also alleged that the ongoing elections in the region have seen low voter turnout and irregularities. The protesters said that people in PoJK are demanding an end to Pakistan’s control over the territory and are urging the international community to play a greater role in restoring peace, ensuring accountability and safeguarding the lives and rights of the local population.Meanwhile, India has also strongly condemned the neighbouring Pakistan’s crackdown on PoK. The ministry of external affairs called the local elections as “a complete farce.”The MEA also highlighted the situation gripped with violence, blackouts, intimidation, and repression against civilians.
