‘On your Marx’: How US and global media covered Zohran Mamdani’s win

'On your Marx': How US and global media covered Zohran Mamdani's win

The whole world seemed to be on edge, watching the “nepo baby” as he surged toward victory in the mayoral race of one of the richest and most populous cities on Earth. And when he won, both Democrats and MAGA Republicans were stunned, shaken to see a socialist triumph in a region long dominated by the bourgeoisie.Zohran Mamdani secured the top post in NYC with more than 50 per cent of the vote. Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who was backed by Donald Trump and Elon Musk, finished second with just over 40 per cent of the votes, while Republican Curtis Sliva got just seven per cent of the votes. Here’s how some of the most prominent media outlets covered the victory of a man Trump labelled a “communist” in New York City.

HISTORIC: Zohran Mamdani Elected New York City’s First Indian-American Muslim Mayor

New York Post

The Post highlighted Mamdani’s rapid rise and radical leanings. One headline read: “Zohran Mamdani wins 2025 NYC mayoral election — wastes no time in declaring war on Trump in victory speech.” It noted that he is the first Muslim, first South Asian, and first declared democratic socialist to take the city’s top job. The Post also underscored concerns from business leaders and Jewish organisations over his past positions.“On your Marx, get set, Zo! Socialist Mamdani wins race for mayor” and “The Red Apple,” featuring a sickle and hammer holding a red‑coloured Mamdani, were also published by the New York Post.

The New York Times

Coverage stressed the historic nature of Mamdani’s win and the unease it caused among establishment Democrats. His ability to mobilise younger and progressive voters was emphasised, even as polls suggested doubts about his experience.”MAMDANI SEALS VICTORY IN IMPROBABLE RUN,” read the NYT’s headline.

The New Yorker

The New Yorker shared a social media post giving a sneak peek of Mamdani’s win, with the full cover set to be published next week. The artwork depicted Mamdani using public transport, reflecting his commitment to working-class empowerment.

BBC News

The BBC noted that Mamdani referenced Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech in his victory address after securing the mayoral win.

The Washington Post

Mamdani was vaguely mentioned in The Washington Post’s front page. However, it led with “5 takeaways from Democrats’ big night”.”Democrats swept key elections across the country on Tuesday night, delivering a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s second term so far and boosting the party’s hopes ahead of the midterms,” it said.

Wall Street Journal

WSJ led with how, “For Democrats, Tuesday brought more than three big election victories. It laid out a path to revival for a party that has been dispirited and disempowered under the dominance of President Trump.”

Fox News

Fox News led with “Zohran Mamdani stuns NYC as voters hand power to Democrats’ far-left flank”

USA TODAY

“In generational shift, Zohran Mamdani wins NYC mayor’s race, ” posted USA TODAY.
In sum, media coverage ranged from subtle criticism and unease to praise for an underdog candidate triumphing over experienced veterans. Reports highlighted both historic milestones and demographic breakthroughs, while also raising concerns about radical politics and potential instability. Go to Source
