Residents in and around Seeb are being invited to spend an evening under the sky as the Oman Society of Astronomy and Space teams up with Muscat Municipality for a public stargazing session. The gathering offers a close look at the December Supermoon and the planet Saturn, all set in one of South Mabela’s popular green spaces.

A public invitation to observe the night sky

The Oman Society of Astronomy and Space, working in collaboration with the Muscat Municipality, has announced a community stargazing event that welcomes anyone with an interest in astronomy. The session will take place on Thursday, December 4, with telescopes set up for public use from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Organizers describe it as an opportunity for residents to experience celestial objects in a relaxed setting without needing any prior knowledge.

Highlights of the evening

Visitors will have the chance to observe the Moon at its Full Moon stage, referred to as a Supermoon due to its brighter and slightly larger appearance in the sky. Alongside the lunar viewing, telescopes will also be directed at Saturn, giving attendees a clear look at the planet and its rings. OSAS has framed the event as a moment for people to enjoy the sight of familiar and distant objects that are visible without the need for special expertise.

Location and community experience

The event will be held at the Green Walk in South Mabela. The same area is also known locally as the Green Park and Walkway in South Mabelah within the wider Seeb district. OSAS has referred to the gathering as a chance for the public to join the community of sky watchers often called Friends of the Sky. The open invitation encourages families, hobbyists and anyone curious to take part in an evening dedicated to observation and shared discovery.

Accessible astronomy for all

By choosing an open public space and offering guided telescope viewing, the organizers aim to make astronomy accessible to a diverse audience. The time window from early evening to night allows visitors to come at their convenience. The relaxed setting and the presence of OSAS members make it easier for newcomers to understand what they are seeing while simply enjoying the experience of observing the sky.
