'Not serious enough': Swedish court refuses to deport migrant who raped 16-year-old; cites duration of offence

A Swedish court has ruled that a migrant who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl will not be deported, as the incident was considered too brief to qualify as an “exceptionally serious offence.”Eritrean refugee Yazied Mohamed was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay 240,000 kronor (£17,500) in damages for raping 16-year-old Meya Aberg.”Given the nature and duration of the offence, while serious, it does not constitute an exceptionally serious offence warranting deportation,” the court said in its ruling. Mohamed reportedly attacked the 16-year-old as she walked home through a pedestrian tunnel in Skellefteå after missing her bus following a shift at McDonald’s. The migrant seized the girl’s phone, pulled her into the tunnel, and assaulted her until she managed to break free, as cited by GB News. Aberg and her family reported the attack immediately, but Mohamed was initially acquitted due to a “lack of evidence.””I want to say that I hate him and that he has destroyed me,” Aberg was quoted as saying by local media. Under Swedish law, deportation is allowed only if a crime is deemed “exceptionally serious” and poses a threat to public safety. Responding to the ruling, Donald Trump Jr. wrote on the social media platform X, “What the hell is going on in this world? Wake up people, we are virtue signaling ourselves into extinction!”Croatian MEP Stephen Nikola Bartulica said the judges in the case must “be held accountable” for rejecting the deportation. This is not an isolated case. In July 2025, an Eritrean man with 196 criminal charges, including attacks on police and inmates, avoided deportation. Four Eritrean men accused of gang-raping a woman in 2022 were also allowed to stay in the country, as cited by UKNIP.
