‘No elections during war’: Donald Trump jibes at Zelenskyy’s remark on holding elections in Ukraine; jokes about starting a conflict to delay polls in US

US President Donald Trump turned heads on Monday with a quip about prolonging his time in office, joking that a war could potentially halt the 2028 election. The remark came while speaking at a press briefing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Monday, where the two leaders addressed reporters on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.On the question of holding elections in war-torn Ukraine, Zelenskyy on August 18 said he was open to holding elections in his country once the war with Russia ended and conditions were safe enough for voters.“Yes, of course, we are open to election, yes. We have to do safety in circumstances, and a little bit, we need to work in parliament because during the war, you can’t have elections,” Zelenskyy said.Zelenskyy was elected in 2019 to a five-year term, but the planned 2024 polls were postponed due to Russia’s full-scale invasion. Donald Trump seized the moment to comment about his own political future with a wry remark about his own political future. “During the war you can’t have elections? So let me just see — three and a half years from me, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections. That’s good,” Donald Trump said, joking about extending his own stay in the Oval Office until 2028.Earlier this year President Donald Trump in his interview to The Atlantic denied allegations that he asked his Justice Department to look into the legality of his running again in 2028.The US Constitution prohibits anyone from becoming the president thrice but Donald Trump had dropped hints earlier that there are some loopholes which can be worked out.
