‘New scam just dropped’: Video of Indians ‘abusing’ wheelchairs at airport on India-US route triggers row

'New scam just dropped': Video of Indians 'abusing' wheelchairs at airport on India-US route triggers row

A viral video shamed Indians claiming that they fake disability and book wheelchairs at foreign airports.

A video of long queues of wheelchair-bound people, visibly Indians, at some airport has triggered a massive social media controversy with Indians getting hate from all corners because of what social media users are calling “new scam”. The viral post claimed Air India said 30% of passengers on India-US flights ask for wheelchairs and most of them are able-bodied travelers “scamming the priority boarding system” while those who really need a wheelchair don’t get it. The same X account, claiming to be from Canada, posted another video of Indians “taking all the wheelchairs at airports”. “If they are doing this at airports, do you think our elderly are being scammed by them in our healthcare system too?” the post read. “If they do that to board, imagine what theyll scam once theyre here,” one wrote. Indian entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw reacted to the viral video and suggested that wheelchair at airport should come at a cost. “They should charge an additional Rs 5000 per airport n then they will see how many genuine passengers there are!” Shaw wrote. Shaw received flak for amplifying India-hatred on X and her suggestion was called inconvenient for people who are not faking their disability. Also, many users pointed out that there is no evidence to prove that they were all faking it. One user claimed that it is not about walking at the airport but the process because of which Indians get wheelchairs for their parents as they don’t know English. “It is not about walking it is about the process. Most indian parents don’t know english and dont know where to go so their children book wheelchair so they can go to security clearance, terminal change and baggage collection area without tension,” one wrote.
