New Delhi businessman Sanjay Kaushik sentenced in US: Purchased aviation component for India from Oregon; aim was to export to Russia

Sanjay Kaushik, an Indian man, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for the illegal export of aviation components to Russia via India, violating US security. The Indian-origin man was arrested in Florida in 2024 and has been in custody since then. In 2025, Kaushik pled guilty to conspiring to sell export-controlled aviation components to buyers in Russia. The judge said it was not a mistake but a well-calculated business deal for which Kaushik put his personal gain above US national security and foreign policy. “This was no lapse in judgment. It was a calculated, profit-driven scheme involving repeated transactions, substantial gains, and coordination with foreign co-conspirators, including sanctioned Russian entities,” said US Attorney for the District of Oregon Scott E Bradford. “This defendant sought, on multiple occasions, to undermine safeguards critical to US national security and foreign policy for his own personal gain.”Beginning in early September 2023, Kaushik conspired with others to unlawfully obtain aerospace goods and technology from the United States for end users in Russia. The goods were purchased under the false pretense that they would be supplied to Kaushik’s Indian company, but in reality, those were destined for Russian buyers.

Some items were barred from export to Russia without govt nod

Kaushik and his co-conspirators exported certain components which were specifically barred from export to Russia without license from the government. They purchased an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS), which is a device that provides navigation and flight control data for aircraft, from an Oregon-based supplier. AHRS is one such component that requires a license from the Department of Commerce to be exported to certain countries, including Russia. Kaushik and his aides did get a license because they falsely claimed that the component was going to be exported to India. They said the component would be used in a civilian helicopter. “Kaushik and his co-conspirators obtained the AHRS – which was ultimately detained before it was exported from the United States – on behalf of and with the intention of shipping it, through India, to a customer in Russia,” DOJ report said.Sanjay Kaushik is the managing partner of New Delhi-based air charter services provider Arezo Aviation. Kaushik was arrested when he landed in Miami from India on an official travel. He did not seek release after he was arrested.
