Donald Trump, Zelenskyy discuss Patriot production, Russia peace talks at White House

US President Donald Trump with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a closed-door meeting at the White House on Tuesday, focusing on expanding Ukraine’s defence capabilities, including the production of Patriot missile interceptors, and efforts to revive stalled peace talks with Russia. The meeting in the Oval Office, held ahead of the funeral of late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, came weeks after Trump announced at the Nato summit in Ankara that the US would grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot air defence systems — a long-standing request from Kyiv. After the talks, Zelenskyy described the meeting as “good” and thanked Trump for the US administration’s continued support.”The President and I discussed licenses for Patriot interceptor production and several other ideas that could help. We also spoke about diplomacy — it’s important that the diplomatic process be reinvigorated,” Zelenskyy said in a post on social media. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the meeting as “positive and productive.”

Patriot production, defence cooperation discussed

The discussions centred on strengthening Ukraine’s ability to produce advanced defence systems domestically as Russia continues its missile and drone attacks more than four years after invading Ukraine. According to Reuters, Zelenskyy said the two leaders discussed Trump’s commitment to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missile interceptors under licence.”We talked with the president about licenses for producing interceptors for the Patriots and other ideas that could help,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram.Later in the day, Zelenskyy also met executives from defence giant Lockheed Martin, saying Ukraine and the company were already working on solutions “to move to co-production as quickly as possible”.Luke Coffey, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, told news agency AP that expanding Patriot interceptor production would benefit not only Ukraine but also the US and its allies as global demand for the systems continues to rise.

Push to restart diplomacy with Russia

The leaders also discussed reviving diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia.According to Reuters, Trump intended to discuss the peace process with Zelenskyy, with a White House official saying, “Now is the time to end the war.”Zelenskyy said renewed diplomacy was an important part of the discussions.”We also talked about diplomacy – it is important to step up the diplomatic process,” he said.US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have agreed to visit Ukraine for the first time as part of efforts to revive mediation with Russia. Zelenskyy had said last week that he had already discussed prospects for renewed peace talks with both officials.

Relations between Trump and Zelenskyy improve

The meeting highlighted the improving relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy after a difficult start to Trump’s second term. The two leaders had clashed during Zelenskyy’s earlier White House visit, but ties have warmed in recent months as Ukraine has sought to strengthen relations with the Trump administration while continuing to resist Russian attacks.Relations have improved as Ukraine has intensified strikes on Russia’s oil infrastructure and sought closer defence cooperation with Washington.

Graham’s funeral and sanctions push

Zelenskyy’s visit coincided with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters in Washington. After attending the funeral, the Ukrainian president was scheduled to meet US senators on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are preparing to vote on a bipartisan sanctions package against Russia that Graham had championed before his death. The proposed legislation would impose tariffs on goods from the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, and expand sanctions targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials, financial institutions and energy projects.

Ukraine raises Russia-Iran concerns

Ahead of the meeting, Zelenskyy also alleged that Russia had been assisting Iran by providing satellite imagery of US military bases in the Gulf region, claiming there was a “clear correlation” between those images and subsequent Iranian strikes.Trump, however, downplayed the significance of any such Russian assistance.”I don’t think they’ve been doing it, certainly not at a high level,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday. “And if they have, it has been very un-impactful.”The issue comes after Ukraine struck at least one Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea over the weekend, prompting diplomatic exchanges between the foreign ministers of Iran and Ukraine.Ukraine has maintained that its operations are solely aimed at defending itself against Russian aggression and were not intended to target civilian vessels.
