‘Need to elect JD’: Trump ‘backs’ VP as president nominee in ‘meet with donors’

The report underlined that advisers say the remark doesn’t mean the president has settled on a preferred candidate in 2028 as he continues to weigh between JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio

In a private meeting with donors two weeks ago, US President Donald Trump weighed in on Vice President JD Vance’s name as the presidential candidate for the 2028 elections, according to a report by the Washington Post. The discussions on passing the baton come even as some advisers caution that Trump has yet to settle firmly on a successor. “At the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” Trump said. The report underlined that advisers say the remark doesn’t mean the president has settled on a preferred candidate in 2028 as he continues to weigh between JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio. The private remarks stand in contrast to the US President’s rhetoric in the past year. He has openly mused that the two would make a good joint ticket and has repeatedly declined to specify who he would prefer to see at the top. According to a White House official, the president quizzed staff about the two men on a Marine One ride late last month.
