What if 'Obsession' were made in Mollywood? Could Curry Baker's horror drama work as a Malayalam film?

What if ‘Obsession’ was made in Mollywood; could Curry Baker’s horror drama work as a Malayalam film.

Curry Baker’s ‘Obsession’ is built around a simple but intriguing premise. The film relies on its central idea and character-driven tension rather than a massive production scale. Its approach could fit well with the sensibilities of Malayalam cinema, which has often explored unconventional concepts through grounded storytelling.A Malayalam adaptation could retain the core idea while shifting the narrative into a distinctly Kerala setting. The supernatural elements could also be connected to local folklore. This could make the story feel less like a direct remake and more like a film inspired by the original concept.

Naslen could step into the lead role

Michael Johnston plays Bear in the original film. The character is an awkward music store employee who struggles to express his feelings for his childhood friend Nikki. His inability to communicate his love eventually pushes him towards a supernatural solution. For a Malayalam version, Naslen could be an interesting choice for Bear. The actor has gradually been exploring different genres and characters. Also, in his recent film ‘Mollywood Times’, Naslen switched from his comfort zone to something risky, which could be seen as a gamble. The character’s transformation would also give Naslen an opportunity to explore a darker side. Bear initially appears harmless and relatable. As his obsession grows, the performance would require a more unsettling quality.

Rahul Sadasivan could bring the horror

Rahul Sadasivan could be another strong choice for the proposed adaptation. The filmmaker has become closely associated with Malayalam horror through films such as ‘Bhoothakaalam’, ‘Bramayugam’ and ‘Dies Irae’.His approach could suit the psychological nature of ‘obsession’. Instead of depending entirely on jump scares, the film could use silence, atmosphere and sound to create unease.A Sadasivan-directed version could also make the supernatural element feel more rooted in Kerala. The horror could slowly emerge from an ordinary romantic situation. The relationship between the characters could then become increasingly disturbing as the story progresses.

Who will play Nikki?

Inde Navarette’s Nikki plays a crucial role in the original film. The character’s relationship with Bear gradually becomes central to the story. Finding the right Malayalam actress for the role would therefore be important.Kalyani Priyadarshan could be an interesting option. Her performance in ‘Lokah’ showcased a more intense side of her acting. She has also previously shared screen space with Naslen in the same movie, which adds a familiarity factor to it.

What about ‘One Wish Willow’?

The setting of the Malayalam version of ‘Obsession’ could be one of the biggest changes in a Malayalam adaptation. Instead of replicating the atmosphere of the original, the film could be relocated to Kochi and its surrounding areas. The supernatural object could also be redesigned using elements from Kerala’s folklore. An old wooden charm or ritual object could replace the “One Wish Willow” from the original. The object could be discovered inside an antique shop or a small store near an old temple. Its history could remain unclear for much of the film. The horror could unfold in familiar spaces. A closed music shop, a family home or a rain-soaked street could gradually become unsettling. Rahul Sadasivan will have ample space to play with the sound design as well.A Malayalam adaptation of Obsession could therefore preserve its central premise while giving it a distinctly local identity.Readers, what do you think about our version of Mollywood ‘Obsession’?
