Students at a major US university will now have to arrive on campus with a business suit and comply with new restrictions on certain headwear under a revised dress code aimed at promoting professionalism, a move that has triggered a sharp online debate over whether the policy encourages workplace readiness or unfairly targets Black students.Tuskegee University, a historically Black university (HBCU) in Alabama, announced the updated rules ahead of the new semester in a message from university president Dr. Mark Brown.Students must bring business suits, follow stricter dress rulesUnder the new policy, students are required to arrive on campus with a business suit and appropriate shoes suitable for a business meeting. The university has also prohibited revealing clothing in classrooms, cafeterias and official events such as convocation.The updated code bars students from wearing bedroom slippers, bonnets and du-rags to classes or the cafeteria. In addition, the university has banned cellphone use in classrooms and reiterated its mandatory attendance policy.Brown said the measures were not intended to limit students’ college experience but to help prepare them for professional life after graduation.”The goal here is not meant to restrict you from enjoying the Tuskegee Experience, but to prepare you with a solid foundation for the workforce you will enter once you leave Tuskegee,” he said. The university did not specify penalties for violating the dress code, but said faculty members would be empowered to respond to students who fail to follow the guidelines.
Dress code divides opinion online
The policy quickly drew mixed reactions on social media, with critics arguing it reflects “respectability politics” and places unnecessary expectations on Black students.Several users said professionalism should not be judged by appearance and argued that clothing has little connection with future career success. Others questioned whether paying students should be subject to such strict personal appearance rules.Supporters, however, said the dress code reinforces discipline and prepares students for interviews and workplace expectations.Many argued that learning to dress appropriately for professional settings is an important life skill rather than an attempt to suppress cultural identity.Alumni say standards have existed for yearsSome alumni defended the university’s decision, saying formal dressing has long been part of campus culture.Kaylan Parham, who graduated in 2022, said students regularly wore suits, ties and formal attire even before the latest announcement, describing the new policy as a reminder of existing expectations rather than a major change.Another alumna, Gwen McKinney, welcomed the move, saying there is “a time and place” for different styles of dress.Meanwhile, Imani Cheers, an alumna of Howard University, said HBCUs have historically emphasised professional presentation and argued that maintaining such standards aligns with their legacy.To help students meet the new requirements, the university said it will operate a community closet for those who need access to professional clothing.The updated policies come as Tuskegee prepares to welcome its largest freshman class in more than three decades.
