King Charles proceeds with four-day US state visit after White House dinner shooting scare

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to arrive in the United States on Monday for a four-day state visit that comes at a crucial moment in UK-US relations. The trip, the most significant foreign tour of Charles’s reign, coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence and marks the first such visit by a British monarch in two decades.

Visit comes after White House dinner shooting scare

The visit comes just days after a shooting incident near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where Donald Trump and senior officials were believed to be potential targets. Despite the scare, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the visit would proceed as planned following high-level security reviews, Reuters reported. The royal tour comes against a backdrop of strained ties between Washington and London, largely driven by differences over the US-Israel conflict involving Iran.Trump has publicly criticised Keir Starmer for Britain’s stance, adding to friction between the traditionally close allies. The British government hopes the visit will help stabilise the historic “special relationship,” seen as under pressure not witnessed since the Suez Crisis.Charles, often described as a key diplomatic figure despite his constitutional role, is expected to use the visit to reinforce shared values and cooperation. The visit will begin with a private meeting and tea with Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Charles will then address the US Congress — only the second British monarch to do so — followed by a state dinner at the White House. The royal couple will also travel to New York to honour victims of the September 11 attacks ahead of its 25th anniversary, and later visit Virginia, where the king will highlight environmental initiatives, a long-standing focus of his public life.

Domestic criticism

Back in Britain, the visit has sparked debate. Critics argue the optics of engaging closely with Trump amid geopolitical tensions are problematic, while others see it as a necessary effort to strengthen diplomatic ties. The visit also comes amid attention on the Prince Andrew controversy linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. However, royal sources indicate the issue will remain off the official agenda to avoid legal complications.
