‘Just bed and toilet’: No royal privileges for arrested ex-prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor

Britain’s former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, will receive no special treatment in custody and can legally be held for up to 96 hours, according to experts cited by the BBC.Danny Shaw, a policing commentator speaking to BBC, said the “absolute longest” Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor can be detained is 96 hours, but only if multiple extensions are granted by senior police officers and a Magistrate’s Court. In most cases, Shaw noted, suspects are held for 12 or 24 hours before being charged or released pending further investigation.Shaw said the former prince would be placed in “a cell in a custody suite” with just “a bed and a toilet”, where he will remain until questioned. He added that “there’ll be no special treatment for him”.It is not yet known what time Andrew was arrested or where he is being held. The arrest comes amid the mounting scrutiny faced by Andrew over his links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has constantly denied the charges. Latest revelations suggest that he shared some confidential documents with the late disgraced financier, while holding the position of UK’s trade envoy. Earlier, Thames Valley police said in a statement: “As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.“The man remains in police custody at this time.“We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance. Please also remember that this case is now active so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.”Assistant chief constable Oliver Wright said: “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.“It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence.“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”The arrest marks the first time the former royal has been detained.
