'Jail for maybe up to 3 years': Canadian journalist on murders of two Indians in Toronto within a week

Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman said the murderers of the two Indians found dead in Canada, if caught, will be put in jail for maybe up to three years before being let out to rampage the streets again. Shivank Avasthi, a student at the University of Toronto Scarborough, was shot dead near his university campus. The Indian consulate in Toronto expressed anguish over the death and said they were in touch with the bereaved family. No arrest has been made in the case. In a separate incident, Himanshi Khurana, a 30-year-old Indian woman, was found dead after being reported missing. The police issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Abdul Ghafoori, believed to be the culprit. Investigators said that Himanshi Khurana’s case appeared to be “intimate partner violence”.

Two Indians Killed In Canada Within A Few Days, Families Raise Question On Safety Of Students Abroad

The two incidents are unrelated “The two murders are probably not connected because they are in different provinces, more than a day’s drive away from each other. The most recent murder in Toronto, if we know it’s a murder, we just know the name of the victim and that he was shot dead. We don’t know why, who and anything else. The police are probably looking into it… But this is Canadian police; I expect extreme incompetence,” Bordman said.”If this was a mean comment online about a government official who was not White, the person might be in jail for 50 years. But this is just a murder, so this is not so serious to Toronto Police. They will fumble it, and if they don’t, and they find the person who is responsible, they will be put in jail for maybe up to 3 years before being let out to rampage the streets again. That’s what the police is up to,” Bordman said.
