Is Donald Trump fit for the Oval Office? US President undergoes medical exam ahead of 80th birthday

US President Donald Trump underwent his annual medical examination on Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, with renewed public attention on his health and stamina just days before his 80th birthday.Following the check-up, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that the results were positive.“Just finished my 6 month physical at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. Everything checked out PERFECTLY. Thank you to the great Doctors and Staff! Heading back to the White House. President DJT,” Trump wrote.Trump arrived at the military hospital near Washington at around 8:50 am local time for what the White House described as routine preventive medical and dental check-ups. The examination comes amid growing scrutiny over visible bruising on his hands, swelling in his legs and occasional appearances where he appeared drowsy during meetings.Trump, who turns 80 on June 14, is the oldest person elected US president. This is his fourth publicly disclosed medical exam since returning to office for a second term. The White House said details of the medical assessment would be released later, though the extent of disclosure remains at the president’s discretion.

Questions over transparency and health

Trump has repeatedly defended his fitness for office and often compared his physical and mental health favourably with former president Joe Biden.“I feel the same as I did 50 years ago,” Trump said earlier this month. “Maybe junk food is good,” he added, referring to his well-known fondness for burgers, steak and Diet Coke. However, concerns about presidential health transparency have resurfaced in recent months.Administrations traditionally release selected portions of presidential medical reports, but critics argue the information is filtered through the White House.A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted in April found that fewer than half of US adults believed Trump had the physical health or mental sharpness required to serve effectively as president.White House spokesperson Davis Ingle defended the president’s condition, saying Trump “remains in excellent health” and is “the sharpest and most accessible President in American history.”

Previous health concerns

Last year, the White House disclosed that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition affecting blood circulation in the veins, after swelling was observed in his legs and ankles. The White House attributed bruising on Trump’s hands to aspirin use as part of a cardiovascular health regimen.Following a medical evaluation in October last year, Trump’s physician, US navy captain Sean Barbabella, said the president’s cardiovascular health was “excellent.”Barbabella further claimed Trump’s “cardiac age” was approximately 14 years younger than his actual age. Some of Trump’s previous examinations included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, commonly used to screen for cognitive impairment. His doctors previously stated that he scored 30 out of 30 in assessments conducted in 2018 and 2025.

Debate over presidential health disclosure

The latest medical examination has again triggered debate in the US over how much health information presidents should publicly disclose, particularly as American politics increasingly features ageing leaders.According to news agency AP, bioethicist Sara Rosenthal said the public often receives only limited information unless presidents are in “perfect health,” while medical expert S Jay Olshansky argued that fuller disclosure of presidential medical records was necessary because “nothing should be hidden.”The White House has not indicated whether Tuesday’s examination involved any procedures requiring anaesthesia.Under the 25th Amendment, temporary transfer of presidential authority to Vice President JD Vance would be required if Trump underwent sedation for a medical procedure.
