PC: Archaeology Wiki

Archaeologists in Egypt have reportedly made an extraordinary discovery. In the sands of Luxor, a hidden chamber was recently opened to reveal 22 coffins that had remained undisturbed for thousands of years. The coffins were found to be remarkably well-preserved and had paintings on them. Some of them were also found to contain mummies. The discovery is said to be of great importance and could reveal much about the lives of women in days of yore and their roles in religious activities. It is believed that the place might have been a hub for women who played a role in activities shaping the spiritual and social lives of people.

Hidden chamber in Luxor’s Qurna reveals carefully stacked coffins and rare mummies

The secret chamber is located in the Qurna area, part of the sprawling Theban Necropolis on Luxor’s west bank. Carved directly into the bedrock, it appears to have been used as a storage space for coffins moved from older tombs. Experts suggest these were not random burials. The coffins were stacked carefully in layers, with lids separated to fit neatly. There were ten horizontal rows in total. It seems whoever organised this had thought through every detail. Some of the mummies inside are still intact, which is unusual. Usually, reburials from this period left remains disturbed or damaged. Many of the coffins reportedly belong to women with the title “Singer of Amun.” That title was not just decorative. These women took part in temple ceremonies and might have influenced their communities. Experts say this shows a more nuanced picture of women in ancient Egypt spiritually and socially. Dr. Zawi Hawass, overseeing the excavation, notes that the find could change our understanding of female roles in Egyptian society. Some coffins bear professional titles, giving clues about the identities and status of those inside. Personal names are rare, but their importance is clear.

Rare papyrus scrolls and ancient artefacts reveal secrets of Luxor tomb

Alongside the coffins, archaeologists discovered rare papyrus scrolls sealed in ceramic vessels, with original clay seals intact. These scrolls are reportedly in good condition and will be restored and translated in the months to come.Wooden artefacts were also found, delicate and fragile. Experts say the restoration process is painstaking. Some timber was weak, paint was flaking. Careful cleaning is underway to preserve the colours and patterns. It seems like every item tells a story waiting for historians to read it.Even small details, the way a lid was stacked or a piece of wood carved, give a glimpse into ancient life.

Egypt’s hidden treasures offer a rare glimpse into ancient life

Sharif Fathi, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, called the find “a new addition to the record of outstanding discoveries.” It seems Egypt still holds secrets tucked away beneath the desert sands. For now, the coffins and scrolls will remain under careful study. But already, they have given a rare look at rituals, roles, and lives that vanished millennia ago. Go to Source
