FBI defends Kash Patel’s use of SWAT protection for girlfriend, saying she faced ‘hundreds of credible threats’

FBI defends Kash Patel’s use of SWAT protection for girlfriend, saying she faced ‘hundreds of credible threats’

The FBI has defended director Kash Patel’s controversial decision to deploy SWAT agents to protect his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, insisting the extraordinary security measures were justified because she has received ‘hundreds of credible death threats’ linked to her relationship with Patel. The bureau’s statement comes amid growing criticism from current and former FBI officials, lawmakers and even conservative commentators who accuse Patel of misusing elite tactical teams and government aircraft for personal purposes.

FBI says threats against Wilkins required extra protection

According to the bureau’s public statements, Wilkins’ protective detail was authorised after officials assessed repeated and credible threats directed at her online. An FBI spokesperson said that her safety concerns necessitated enhanced protection, although the bureau declined to provide specific details, citing operational sensitivity. Officials argue that Patel, as director, is a “required-use traveller” entitled to government aircraft and security assets, with the FBI emphasising that his travel and protective arrangements “follow all required regulations.”Ben Williamson, Patel’s spokesman, further defended the deployments, saying the director would not compromise Wilkins’ safety and calling attacks on her “disgustingly baseless.” He added that Patel reimburses the government for personal travel at the commercial-ticket rate, which is standard practice for senior officials.

Kash Patel’s use of jets and tactical teams fuels a broader controversy

The SWAT deployments are only part of a wider scandal surrounding Patel’s leadership, with critics pointing to his repeated use of a $60 million FBI Gulfstream jet for trips connected to Wilkins, including flights to her performances and cross-country visits. Former agents argue that diverting tactical units from emergency response work to protect a non-spouse is a misuse of government resources.while others accuse Patel of hypocrisy after he previously condemned similar travel habits by past FBI directors. Patel and his team maintain that all actions have adhered to policy and were driven solely by genuine security threats to Wilkins, but the controversy has intensified questions about his judgment, ethics and the blurring of personal and official boundaries at the top of the bureau.
