Dubai reopens Shri Krishna Temple and St Mary’s Church from April 11 with limited services

After days of precautionary closures across Dubai, two major places of worship, the Shri Krishna Temple Dubai and St Mary’s Catholic Church Dubai, have officially reopened to the public on April 11, 2026, marking a gradual return to normal religious activity in the emirate. The reopening follows temporary suspensions introduced earlier this month under government safety directives amid heightened regional tensions, which had impacted churches, temples, and other worship spaces across the city.

Why were the Dubai worship places closed?

The closures began on April 3, when authorities instructed places of worship to halt in-person gatherings and shift to online services as a precautionary measure. This period coincided with Holy Week, one of the most significant times in the Christian calendar, when churches typically see peak attendance. Several major churches, including St Mary’s and St Francis of Assisi in Jebel Ali, suspended all masses and activities, while Hindu temples and gurudwaras also followed similar directives.Religious authorities and church leaders urged worshippers to comply, emphasising that the move was temporary and aimed at safeguarding community well-being.

Dubai’s Shri Krishna Temple darshan resumes

The historic Shri Krishna Temple Dubai, one of the oldest Hindu temples in the UAE, reopened for regular darshan from Saturday, April 11. Temple authorities confirmed that the reopening aligns with directives issued by the Community Development Authority, part of broader efforts to safely restore access to religious spaces.Located in Bur Dubai, the temple has long served as a spiritual hub for the Indian expatriate community and follows traditional Pushtimarg rituals centred around Lord Krishna.Devotees can now return for daily darshan sessions, which typically occur multiple times from early morning to evening, however, visitors are expected to continue adhering to official safety and community guidelines.

St Mary’s Church reopens

At the same time, St Mary’s Catholic Church Dubai resumed services from April 11, but with restricted attendance and controlled access. The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia, which oversees Catholic churches in the region, confirmed the reopening. The church will operate with limited in-person services to ensure compliance with safety measures.St Mary’s is one of the region’s largest Catholic parishes, serving a diverse congregation of over 350,000 worshippers from various nationalities. Services are held in multiple languages throughout the week.

Looking ahead

The reopening of both institutions reflects a broader, carefully managed return to normal life in Dubai, where authorities continue to balance public safety with community needs.Across the city, religious institutions are expected to operate under regulatory frameworks, with an emphasis on controlled gatherings and adherence to official guidelines. For thousands of residents, the reopening is more than just a policy shift, it restores access to spiritual spaces that play a central role in community life, especially during significant religious periods.
