Dubai parking scam alert: Fake QR codes could steal your bank details

A new scam has surfaced in Dubai’s parking areas, where scammers are placing fake QR codes on parking signages to trick drivers into making payments through fraudulent links. These counterfeit codes can capture personal and banking information, exposing motorists to financial risk. The issue gained attention after a video showing QR code tampering went viral online. Parkin Company PJSC, Dubai’s largest provider of paid parking facilities, confirmed it is aware of the incident. In a statement shared with Khaleej Times, the company said all identified fraudulent QR codes have been removed. It also said that any QR codes that were misused have been updated to redirect users to the official Roads and Transport Authority website. Scammers typically place fake stickers over legitimate QR codes on parking signboards, making the tampering difficult to detect at first glance. All parking signages across Dubai feature QR codes that allow motorists to pay parking fees quickly and conveniently. Drivers who choose mobile or mParking services save 30 fils compared to paying via SMS. When scanned correctly, the QR code activates an App Clips feature linked to the Parkin App, allowing users to pay instantly using the bank card stored on their mobile device without downloading a separate application. Parkin has urged motorists to always use authorised payment channels and thanked the public for reporting suspicious activity. The company warned that fake QR codes can steal sensitive information, including personal and bank details, and advised drivers to rely on official platforms such as the RTA app or Parkin when making parking payments.
