For most Dubai residents, dealing with electricity or water services has long meant logging into an app or visiting a website. That routine is now beginning to change, with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority making its services available through ChatGPT.The launch places DEWA on the ChatGPT Apps Directory, marking a global first for both government bodies and utility providers. Officials said the move reflects a shift toward conversational, AI-led service delivery, moving beyond traditional digital channels, such as websites and mobile applications.Through ChatGPT, customers can now access a range of DEWA services directly. These include bill enquiries, checking account details, receiving billing and account support, locating EV Green Charger stations and getting directions to the nearest charging point. Users can also obtain information about Customer Happiness Centre locations, working hours and official contact channels. DEWA said additional services will be rolled out gradually, in line with its governance, security and privacy framework.Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive of DEWA, described the rollout as part of a broader shift in how people interact with public services. He said the “AI Integration and Operating Services” initiative aims to move government service delivery away from conventional digital models towards systems embedded within global AI platforms. According to Al Tayer, integrating DEWA’s services with ChatGPT allows customers to engage through natural conversational interfaces and intelligent multi-agent systems. He added that the initiative supports the authority’s goal of delivering resilient, proactive and secure services, while reinforcing Dubai’s ambition to position itself as a global centre for artificial intelligence and sustainable innovation.DEWA said it is steadily working towards becoming the world’s first AI-native utility, responding to changing customer behaviour as AI platforms increasingly become a primary channel for accessing services and information. The development comes amid rapid growth in AI adoption across the UAE. OpenAI reported last year that its user base in the country had tripled year-on-year. Usage remains particularly strong among younger residents, with around 60 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 and roughly half of people aged 25 to 34 using ChatGPT weekly.
