‘Did something to them’: Indian-origin woman charged with killing her 2 young sons in New Jersey; probe underway

An Indian-origin woman in the United States has been arrested and charged in New Jersey with the murder of her two young children, authorities said. Priyatharsini Natarajan, 35, of Hillsborough Township, is accused of killing her two sons, who were found dead inside the family’s home on Tuesday night.Somerset county prosecutor John McDonald said in a statement on Wednesday that at around 6.45 pm (local time) on January 13, a 911 call was made to law enforcement by an individual believed to be the children’s father, as cited by PTIThe caller reported that he had found his two sons, aged five and seven, unconscious after returning home from work and said that “his wife did something to them.” Police officers who responded to the scene found the caller at the residence along with his wife, identified as Natarajan.Life-saving efforts by police officers and medical personnel failed, and both children were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identities of the two children, pending positive identification by the Medical Examiner’s Office.Natarajan has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. She was arrested by Hillsborough police officers and transported to the Somerset County Jail, where she is being held pending a detention hearing. The cause of death remains under investigation, McDonald said. The case is being handled by detectives from the Hillsborough Township Police Department, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and medical investigators from the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.A postmortem examination will be conducted by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office to positively identify the victims and determine the cause and manner of death, according to the statement.
