Nearly 200 academicians wrote to Priyanka over controversial remarks targeting IIT director
NEW DELHI: More than 200 academicians have written an open letter to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, objecting to her remarks about IIT Madras director V Kamakoti during the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.The signatories said public representatives should engage with ideas through reasoned debate rather than ridicule and argued that reducing an academician to a label weakens scientific discourse and public debate.The letter comes after Priyanka Gandhi, while questioning the composition of the government’s education reform panel during the debate on Tuesday, referred to a ‘gau-mutra expert’. Though she did not name anyone, the remark was widely seen as referring to Prof Kamakoti, who is among the six domain experts appointed to the panel reviewing the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) following the NEET paper leak controversy.‘Mockery is no substitute for reasoned engagement’In the open letter, the academicians said Parliament should remain a place where ideas are debated with dignity and individuals are judged by the strength of their arguments rather than by caricatures.”To dismiss a scholar through a label rather than engage with the substance of his views risks undermining the very scientific temper that our Constitution calls upon every citizen to develop,” the letter said. The signatories highlighted Prof Kamakoti’s academic credentials, observing that he holds MS and PhD degrees from IIT Madras, has published more than 150 research papers, led over 50 research and development projects and played a key role in developing India’s first industry-grade microprocessor.They also said that, like any academic, he has the right to present hypotheses and discuss traditional knowledge.”Scientific temper is not merely scepticism towards unconventional ideas, it is equally the willingness to examine claims objectively before accepting or rejecting them,” the letter stated.‘Scientists deserve debate, not labels’The academicians said the remarks send the wrong message to India’s research and academic community.”Our scientists, scholars and educators deserve to know that they can participate in public debate without fear of being reduced to dismissive labels. Criticise their arguments, challenge their evidence, demand higher standards of proof, but do not diminish scholarship itself,” the letter said.It further argued that public representatives have a responsibility to maintain the quality of national discourse.”In a democracy, disagreement is essential. Mockery is not a substitute for reasoned engagement. When complex scientific questions become objects of political ridicule, society loses an opportunity for informed debate,” it said.The signatories expressed hope that future debates, particularly in Parliament, would reflect these principles, saying that India’s democracy deserved ‘nothing less’.Background of the controversyThe row began during the Lok Sabha debate on the anti-paper leak amendment bill, when Priyanka Gandhi criticised the government’s education reforms and questioned the composition of the expert panel reviewing the NTA.
