PM Modi greets Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman on Eid, both hope for stronger ties

NEW DELHI/DHAKA: PM Narendra Modi on Thursday conveyed Eid-ul-Adha greetings to Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman and the people of Bangladesh, with both the prime ministers looking forward to a stronger relationship between the nations. In his reply on social media, Bangladesh PM said, “May the relations between the peoples of Bangladesh and India continue to be strengthened on the foundations of mutual respect, friendship, and goodwill.”India-Bangladesh ties, strained since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as PM in 2024, have taken a further hit with water sharing being the latest diplomatic flashpoint between the neighbours. To add, Rahman is expected to travel to Beijing next month in what would mark his first overseas visit since the formation of the new BNP govt, despite a pending invitation from Modi and Bhutan initially being chosen as the destination of his first foreign tour.Extending greetings on Eid, PM Modi said the shared vision of Bangladesh and India as reflected in their national development goals is aimed at the mutual benefit of their peoples. “Govt of India looks forward to working closely with Govt of Bangladesh to strengthen people-centric cooperation in various domains,” PM Modi said in his letter to PM Rahman. He said Bangladesh and India share a deep-rooted bond built on shared sacrifices, cultural commonalities, and a mutual desire for peace, stability and growth. “I thank PM Modi for his very kind greetings to me and the people of Bangladesh on the joyous occasion,” PM Tarique said responding to PM Modi’s letter.
