Messi event fiasco: CM Mamata Banerjee to take sports charge; Aroop Biswas quits ministry

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is set to take charge of the state’s sports ministry after her cabinet colleague Aroop Biswas offered to resign after the allegations of “mismanagement” during football star Lionel Messi’s event at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium.Earlier in the day, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh shared what he described as a copy of a resignation letter written by Biswas to Banerjee, in which the minister sought to be relieved of his responsibilities as sports minister. The development comes amid mounting criticism and political backlash over alleged mismanagement and security lapses at the high-profile event held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on December 13.

Angry spectators allegedly went on a rampage and clashed with police, causing damage to stadium furniture estimated at around Rs 2 crore.“Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting to be relieved of the responsibility of the sports department,” Ghosh said, linking the move directly to the controversy surrounding the Messi event.
