JAMMU: As many as 206,460 dog bite cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir in the past two years, with Jammu division accounting for 126,844 cases and Kashmir valley 79,616 cases, informed state health and medical education minister Sakina Itoo in the assembly on Thursday.In a written reply during the question hour, Itoo said, in Jammu district alone, 33,065 dog bite cases were reported in 2024. This increased to 43,759 in 2025, taking the district’s two-year total to 76,824. In Srinagar, the minister said, 12,557 cases were reported in 2024 and 12,592 in 2025.Itoo stated there was no report of an increase in the population of stray dogs within Jammu municipal corporation. However, Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC) conducted a scientific population survey in 2023, which estimated 64,416 stray dogs within its limits. SMC has outsourced the management of the population to Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Vaccination programme.
