Twisha Sharma death case: Husband Samarth Singh wants to surrender before trial court, says lawyer

In a dramatic turn in the Twisha Sharma death case, the absconding accused husband Samarth Singh informed the Madhya Pradesh high court that he was willing to surrender in the ongoing dowry death case and sought permission to withdraw his anticipatory bail plea. Appearing before Justice Singh, senior advocate Mrigendra Singh, representing Samarth Singh, requested that the trial court be directed to hear and decide his client’s bail plea on the same day of surrender. Delhi HC pulls up wrestling federation for declaring Vinesh Phogat ‘ineligibile’ for domestic events

The Delhi high court has pulled up the Wrestling Federation of India over its decision declaring wrestler Vinesh Phogat “ineligible” for domestic events and directed the Centre to constitute an expert panel to assess her case. A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that motherhood is celebrated in the country and the federation should not act with “vengeance.” The court also asked the Centre to ensure that Phogat, who is returning after a maternity break, is allowed to participate in the Asian Games selection trials scheduled for May 30–31. RBI steps in with heavy dollar sales to defend rupee as currency rebounds from record lows: Report

The Reserve Bank of India is estimated to have sold between $2 billion and $3 billion on Thursday to support the rupee amid sustained pressure on the currency, according to bankers cited by Reuters. The intervention helped the rupee strengthen by 0.64 per cent to close at 96.20 against the US dollar on Thursday, with further gains recorded on Friday after the central bank reportedly resumed dollar sales. Bankers said the RBI intervened through large state-run banks even before markets opened on Thursday, with nearly $500 million believed to have been sold during pre-market trading. Read full story

‘Content, not individuals’: SC tones down remarks against academicians in NCERT row

The Supreme Court assured three academicians linked to the now-removed National Council of Educational Research and Training Class 8 sub-chapter titled “Corruption in Indian Judiciary” that it would delete certain harsh observations made against them in an earlier order. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi clarified that the court’s observations in the suo motu proceedings were directed at the “content” of the chapter and not at the academicians personally.
