Centre extends Manipur violence inquiry, new deadline set for May 20, 2026

NEW DELHI: The Centre has further extended the term of the commission of inquiry looking into the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur in May 2023, leading to a cycle of unrest, notifying May 20, 2026 as the new deadline for it to submit its report.“The Commission shall submit its report to the Central government as soon as possible but not later than the 20th May, 2026,” stated a gazette notification issued by the home ministry on Tuesday. The commission was set up on June 4, 2023, to investigate the series of events, including the reasons and extent of violence and riots targeting different communities, that started in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Headed by former chief justice of Gauhati High Court Justice (Retd) Ajai Lamba, it also comprises retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and ex-IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar as members. The commission has seen multiple extensions, the latest being the fifth one, over the past 30 months.
