NEW DELHI: In a strong message to state regulatory bodies to act responsibly while dealing with complaints against advocates, SC Wednesday imposed a cost of Rs 50,000 each in two cases on Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa (BCMG) for entertaining frivolous complaints against two lawyers and ordering inquiries.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said that as per the law the bar councils concerned must record reasons for its prima facie belief that an advocate has committed misconduct requiring reference of the complaint to the disciplinary committee.It found that in both cases, references of complaints to DC were preceded by ‘cryptic & laconic’ orders without recording any satisfaction to the effect that the advocates committed misconduct.
