AAP sarpanch gunned down at Amritsar wedding

AMRITSAR: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead while he was attending a wedding in Punjab’s Amritsar Sunday. Two armed assailants stormed the venue between 2.30pm and 3pm, opening fire at Jarmal Singh, the sarpanch of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district. He was shot in the head at point-blank range, said officials. This was not the first attempt on Singh’s life. Police records reveal that the sarpanch had survived three previous murder attempts. The gunmen struck moments after the newlyweds departed the venue. “The assailants arrived with premeditated intent. Eyewitness accounts suggest the attackers did not cover their faces, and we suspect the victim was under surveillance before the attack,” a police spokesperson said.Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries later. A video surfaced, showing him lying injured at the scene. No arrests had been made till late Sunday. Police were focusing on a photograph that surfaced, allegedly showing the attackers.Additional deputy commissioner JS Walia said that an investigation was underway in the case. “We have cordoned off the resort and are questioning guests. CCTV footage is being analysed to track the escape route of the suspects,” Walia said.
