Yuvraj gave the idea of ‘divorce’ to his parents Yograj, Shabnam

Yuvraj Singh gave the idea of 'divorce' to his parents Yograj Singh and Shabnam: 'They were always fighting'

Yuvraj Singh will always be remembered as one of the most loved cricketers of the country. While his talent, hard work and success is not something that can be denied, there’s never been any dearth of struggles in the cricketer’s life – be it his traumatic childhood to his fight with cancer. Yuvraj has never also shied away from expressing himself and opening up on his vulnerabilities. In an old interview, the former India all-rounder revealed that he was the one who urged his parents to separate after years of growing tension at home. Yuvraj, who shared a complicated relationship with his father, actor and former cricketer Yograj Singh, said he realised early on that the constant arguments were taking a toll on everyone, including him.Yograj Singh, a former India player who went on to act in Punjabi and Hindi films, was known for his strong personality, something Yuvraj says made his own childhood difficult. In a conversation with Simi Garewal years ago, the 2011 World Cup hero opened up about living under the weight of his father’s ambitions.“What I heard was that he worked very hard for his game, and he was very talented. He was just very aggressive, and he did things his own way, so it was tough on him. He wanted to see himself through me, and he wanted me to play for India,” Yuvraj said.He also expressed deep gratitude for his mother, Shabnam Singh, who raised him after the separation. “I think only a mother can make the sacrifices that my mom made to bring me up. I am very thankful for having a mother like that,” he shared. The cricketer recalled that the decision for his parents to part ways was ultimately his own. “Yeah, I was about 14 or 15 years old, and it was getting tough to be in that kind of an atmosphere where your parents are always fighting. It wasn’t good for me, and I was also playing at the time. I gave them the idea and told them that they should go their separate ways instead of causing such pain for the kids or the people around you,” he revealed.Yuvraj moved in with his mother when he was 17, while Yograj later remarried and had two more children. Over the years, their relationship has remained strained. In an earlier conversation with SMTV, Yograj had candidly admitted that the two don’t share a bond anymore. “The day Yuvi hands his children over to me, they will meet the same fate as he did. You can only forge gold through fire. There will be no mercy, because there is only one path… That’s what they fear, and that’s why we aren’t together,” he had said.Yuvraj is married to actress Hazel Keech since 2016, and they have two children: a son named Orion, born in January 2022, and a daughter named Aura, born in August 2023.
