Yash Tonk on ‘late night partying’ with Salman Khan

Yash Tonk on 'late night partying' with Salman Khan: 'Never wanted to give reason, because I was with Salman bhai, I was late'

With over 25 years in the entertainment industry, Yash Tonk has become one of Indian television’s most recognisable faces but his journey to the small screen was paved with big-screen ambitions, Salman Khan connections and a standing ovation that changed everything. In a revealing interview with Siddharth Kannan, Tonk revisited the highs and lows of his film career, shared behind-the-scenes memories from Salman Khan’s sets, and explained why he has made peace with every chapter of his career.

Yash Tonk opens up on ‘Fight Club’s box office failure

Despite being a celebrated television actor, Yash Tonk never quite shook off the industry’s tendency to box him into the “small-screen actor” label, especially when his films underperformed. His 2006 action film ‘Fight Club’, produced by Sohail Khan, was one such film that failed to find commercial traction.”Fight Club didn’t exactly work the way they were expecting it to. As a concept, the film didn’t have acceptance in India,” Tonk recalled, before adding philosophically, “Everybody has their opinion; you cannot make everyone happy.”

The standing ovation moment that caught Salman Khan’s eye

What the film lacked in box office returns, it more than made up for in a single unforgettable screening moment for Tonk. At the film’s trial screening held at Rajendra Kumar’s studios in Bandra, attended by Salman Khan himself, something remarkable happened that would alter the course of Tonk’s film career. “When the film ended, all the cast stood up and clapped for my character; I felt very proud. Salman Bhai was sitting throughout, but that’s him; only his presence is enough. However, he liked my performance, which is why he gave me two films after that — ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ and ‘Jai Ho’.”That silent, seated acknowledgement from Salman Khan, Tonk says, was his true paisa-vasool moment worth more than any box office number.

Yash Tonk on his bond with Salman Khan

Beyond professional collaborations, Tonk describes his relationship with the superstar as something far more personal and warm.”I like his company; who doesn’t want to be with him. I have been to his house, his farmhouse. While Sohail is a good friend, Salman bhai is like a big brother; I get his affection, which is more than enough for me.”The affection, it turns out, also comes with some classic Salman-style late-night plans. Tonk recalled a memorable night during the shoot of ‘Jai Ho’, directed by Sohail Khan, when both he and Sohail had planned an early night ahead of a 7 AM call time only for Salman to intervene.”We both were hanging out and decided to hit the bed after one drink. Just then, Sohail got a call that Salman bhai was calling him. My boy also got a call that I was being called too. Sohail started laughing and said, I will have to go. Then we went and partied till late at night.”Nonetheless, Tonk made it to set on time regardless. “I never wanted to give the reason that because I was with Salman bhai, I was late,” Tonk said with quiet pride.

More about Yash Tonk

Despite his big-screen ambitions, Tonk has built a formidable television career spanning over two and a half decades, with shows like ‘Kahin Kissi Roz’ cementing his status as a household name. His last theatrical appearance was in Kangana Ranaut’s 2019 historical epic ‘Manikarnika’, and his most recent television appearance was in the 2023 show ‘Dhruv Tara.’Far from lamenting the roads not taken, Tonk is candid about the financial and personal security that television has provided him. He shared that he has earned enough from his profession that even two years without work would leave him entirely unaffected.
