An Egyptian doctor lost his license in the UK after he was found to have botched an operation in such a way that the patient could have died. Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, an NHS locum surgeon, wrongly connected the patient’s bowels, and the waste exiting the stomach got redeposited back to the stomach through a closed loop. Another surgeon saved the life of the young man who experienced uncontrollable pain. This happened in 2020 and Rahman was barred from practicing in 2021 but he violated the order and applied for a position in Ireland.The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service heard the case — both the botched operation and the violation of its earlier order — and struck off the Egyptian doctor, which means he is not allowed to work as a doctor anymore.What is more shocking in the case is that Rahman did not consider that something might have gone wrong surgically while the patient’s parents complained that the man was in tremendous pain.
The error was as bad as it gets
A former consultant general and colorectal surgeon, acting as the General Medical Council’s expert witness, said the procedure carried out by Dr Rahman was “not known to man” and his error was “as bad as it gets”, BBC reported.Rahman, who qualified in 1993 from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, did not attend the hearing and was not legally represented. e claimed that he was made a “scapegoat” after a “witch hunt” following the operation, carried out at the Royal Oldham Hospital, where he was working as a locum on 25 August 2020.In July 2021, the tribunal imposed an order restricting his work as a doctor but Rahman broke the conditions of the order and applied for a job at Affidea Express Care Clinic in Ireland in February 2022The tribunal concluded in a ruling last month that Rahman’s misconduct was “fundamentally incompatible with continued registration” and erased him from the medical register so that he can’t work as a doctor.
