When Ram Gopal Varma addressed affair rumours with Urmila Matondkar

When Ram Gopal Varma addressed affair rumours with Urmila Matondkar: 'I was mesmerised by her beauty, from face to figure'

Urmila Matondkar has been in the news lately as her ex-husband Mohsin Akhtar got married for the second time, two years after their divorce. As Mohsin announced marriage to Nidhaa Bhatt, people are taken back to Urmila’s relationship with Mohsin. While she was one of the top actresses in the 90s with movies like ‘Rangeela’, ‘Jungle’, ‘Daud’ and more, Urmila has been away from the limelight ever since she got married. But while she was constantly working, apart from the movies and love she got from the audience, Urmila was also in the news for speculations around her relationship with Ram Gopal Varma. She has frequently collaborated with him on several movies and given her best films with him. Their professional relationship sparked rumours of a personal relationship. The constant buzz surrounding their equation also reportedly impacted Ram Gopal Varma’s personal life. Various reports suggested that his growing closeness to Urmila led to tensions in his marriage with Ratna. Speculation about the alleged affair continued for years, and some reports even claimed that Ratna once slapped Urmila amid the controversy. Eventually, Ram Gopal Varma and Ratna ended their marriage.Addressing the long-standing rumours in a throwback interview with The Times of India earlier, RGV chose not to directly engage with the speculation and instead offered a philosophical response. He had said, “You see my point… if there was a truth why would I not say it? This is a long time you’re talking about—28 years. The point is, I wouldn’t like to talk about anything that happened such a long time ago. I can always deny it, and that’s the same thing I would do even now.”Over the years, the filmmaker has openly expressed admiration for Urmila. In his autobiography, ‘Guns And Thighs: The Story Of My Life’, he wrote about the impact she had on him when they first worked together. He wrote in his book, “Post coming into films, the first girl to have an impact on me was Urmila Matondkar. I was mesmerized by Urmila’s beauty — from her face to her figure… everything about her was just divine. She had done a few films before Rangeela, which hadn’t done well and she hadn’t made much of an impact on the audience either.”Later, Urmila found love with model-turned-actor Mohsin Akhtar. The two reportedly met in 2014 at the wedding celebrations of fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s niece, Riddhi Malhotra. Their friendship gradually blossomed into a relationship, and despite a decade-long age gap, they tied the knot on March 3, 2016, in an intimate ceremony at Urmila’s Mumbai residence. The celebrations included both Hindu wedding rituals and a private nikah ceremony. They got divorced in 2024.
