S. Janaki once survived a life-threatening medical emergency thanks to a Malayali taxi driver; THROWBACK

The demise of legendary playback singer S. Janaki at the age of 88 has resulted in an outpouring of grief from across the Indian film industry. Along with tributes, an inspiring real-life incident from the singer’s past has once again captured public attention. The story recalls how a Malayali taxi driver played a crucial role in saving her life during a medical emergency in Chennai.Recognised as one of India’s greatest playback singers, Janaki enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades. During that time, she recorded over 48,000 songs in more than 20 languages. Her unforgettable voice became an integral part of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and several other film industries.

Singer also faced several false death rumours over the years

Years back, Janaki had repeatedly become the subject of false reports claiming she had died. Despite the emotional nature of such rumours, she reportedly handled the situation with remarkable calm and grace. One of the earliest incidents occurred in 2010, when a newspaper in Andhra Pradesh mistakenly carried news of her death. Instead of reacting angrily, the singer reportedly laughed off the error. The publication later issued a correction. Years later, similar misinformation spread after Janaki announced her retirement from playback singing. More recently, following the death of her son earlier this year, her family once again had to deny rumours circulating on social media regarding the singer.

Medical emergency in Chennai almost turned fatal

As reported by On Manorama, S. Janaki also survived a genuine life-threatening medical emergency during the late 1990s. While she was in Chennai, she reportedly suffered a severe allergic reaction after being administered a penicillin injection. The reaction quickly became critical. She lost consciousness and required immediate medical assistance. Every passing minute became crucial as her condition rapidly worsened.Reportedly, a Malayali taxi driver recognised the seriousness of the emergency and acted without delay. He drove Janaki through Chennai’s traffic at great speed and managed to reach a hospital within minutes to ensure she received treatment at the right time.

S. Janaki remembered the driver

Years later, Janaki looked back on the incident with deep appreciation. She credited the unnamed taxi driver with saving her life and acknowledged that his timely intervention made all the difference.Remembering the incident, the legendary singer described him as a “godlike man”. She also added that without his help, she would never have regained consciousness.

Tributes continue to pour in after her demise

Meanwhile, condolences have continued to arrive from every corner of the country following Janaki’s passing. Actors, filmmakers, musicians and political leaders have all remembered the legendary singer.Among those paying tribute are Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, Vijay, and more.Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, also shared an emotional message on X. He wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary singer, South India’s Nightingale, S. Janaki Amma. Her soulful voice and emotional depth shaped Malayalam cinema’s golden era. Though she has left us, her thousands of timeless melodies will live on forever. Heartfelt condolences to her family and millions of fans. Rest in peace.” Go to Source
